Find Balance: Kefir

In a perfect world keeping the belly and its routine of events is simple. However sometimes in life the unpredictable happens and throws the digestive system off balance. When belly issues occur the first remedy is usually a pink potion that calms the symptoms. Now, while you may have temporary relief from the melody of symptoms the actual problem isn’t addressed and other underlying symptoms can arise from that chalky pink cocktail like
dehydration to constipation. And since neither is more desirable than the other getting your belly back to being balanced is the first thing you’ll want and need to do.

Ways to balance belly

  • Drink Kefir (Start with 4 oz.)
  • Keep hydrated with caffeine free beverages ( water, tea: green/ chamomile twist of lemon.)
  • Eat lighter meals
  • Get moving. (Going for a 15- 20 min walk after eating can get your digestive system going)
  • Fast. (Sometimes giving your belly a break from digestion is the best thing to do)

Kefir…Sutherland?

No not that Kefir. Although it does have gut pleasing heroic properties.  And so if you aren’t familiar with this slightly effervescent  tangy beverage referred to as the “champagne of dairy” you are missing out on one of the simplest ways to keep your gut in an all good state. The benefits are amazing. For one it gives the belly a wonderful dose of :

1.Probiotics

Probiotics are live microorganisims that can provide health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. The benefits of these good bacteria can include supporting immunity and healthy digestive system.

2. Immunity.

The probiotics in Kefir may help support a healthy gut where 70-80 percent of the cells that make up the immune system are located.

3. Digestion.

The live and active probiotic cultures found in kefir can help support digestion.

4. Lactose Digestion

The unique fementation process and specific kefir cultures makes it up to 99 percent lactose- free and suitable for most people who are lactose intolerant.

I am a firm believer and daily consumer of kefir. One of the main reasons I drink kefir is for the health benefits. However I must say how much I enjoy its creamy zing. I drink it straight up or add it to my smoothies for any time of day. My favorite flavor is Strawberry with Blueberry in a close second. One of my favorite ways to enjoy is an Almond Butter Banana and Strawberry smoothie. It is sooo good and takes on the nostalgic PB&J combo.  They are so delicious and satisfying for those who love cold creamy beverages not to mention so good for you. Below I’ve listed the ingredients. Tweak however you’d like. Your world is yours! Enjoy

Almond Butter Banana & Strawberry Smoothie

1 Frozen ripe banana
2 Frozen strawberries
3 teaspoons raw almond butter
4 teaspoons of Honey
5 large ice cubes
6 oz of Kefir

Put all ingredients in blender (although I suggest adding honey after  ingredients are blended. Then blend again.
